bigbrew2010In 1988, May 7th was announced before the U.S. Congress as National Homebrew Day. In celebration of this, people from around the world have been participating in AHA’s Big Brew Day on the first Saturday of May since 2001. In 2001, 5,185 gallons of beer were brewed at 182 brewing sites by 1,864 participants worldwide. In 2009, more than 5,000 people celebrated National Homebrew Day brewing over 13,000 gallons at 342 sites on six continents worldwide. Sites were registered in 47 states and Puerto Rico, as well as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Israel, Kenya, The Netherlands, Russia, and Switzerland.

The Association of Bloomington-Normal Brewers will be participating this year with brewing demonstrations on Saturday, May 1st at Dan Taylor’s house. We’ll be brewing and answering questions about homebrewing from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. If you’ve never brewed before, come out an lend a hand. Although we will not be serving homebrew at this event, come out to the next meeting of the ABNormal Brewers if you want to try some. We meet on the 2nd Monday of every month. See our calendar for details.

If you’re not from the Bloomington-Normal area, check out the AHA’s website for a site near you!
